A buildup of creosote is the main reason why it is very important to have your chimney cleaned and inspected yearly, but did you know that there are 3 levels, or stages, of creosote?
Soot:Soot: While not dangerous, soot is combustible and spreads quickly, leaving dirt discolorations in your home and potentially creating respiratory illnesses.
Creosote flakes:Creosote flakes: If soot isn't taken care of in a timely manner, with time it can change into bigger flakes, which are extremely combustible and harder to get rid of.
Tar creosote: Tar creosote: Creosote coalesces at this point into a thick, combustible paste which coats the walls of the chimney. Gasses are discharged by tar, which remain in a chimney flue till a fire is lit. Then, both the gasses and the tar will catch fire almost instantaneously.
